I’m told that Internet marketing success is based, at least in part, on achieving high rankings with the search engines, especially Google. However if only it was that easy of course – learning seo or search engine optimization take time and lots of study – it’s currently doing my head in.
I have however made the commitment to learn more about search engine optimization, or SEO. I’m obviously particularly interested in SEO for Photographers, but I understand the principles apply the same to any marketplace. Search engines make a determination regarding your site is ranked based on programmed algorithmic criteria. You should utilize SEO to ensure that you site is receiving as much traffic as it possibly can. Knowledge of SEO principles can work to your advantage by increasing site traffic and sales.
There are apparently different things a search engine looks at when ranking your site. An engine scans your site for keywords. It also looks into your site’s activity and the links to and from your site. For example if I was a photographer who specializes in wedding photography I might use that as a keyword and link it to my website.
It’s not easy to find the best strategies for optimizing your website for search engines. Do I rank for Google, or should I rank for Bing? What about Yahoo? For now I need to focus on the the main factors that will need attention which are the design of my website, and the key words that I choose. I understand that utilizing keywords on my site is crucial if I want to rank highly in the search engine results pages.
Sadly, you can’t just offer the search engine money in exchange for good results. But, featured positioning for a link can be purchased. This “featured” positioning means that your website will be among the top few results, with a label or highlight that differentiates it from regular search results. Featured listings are very expensive, and this means purchasing them is usually out of reach for most smaller businesses like mine.
If you’d like to optimize your site for search engine in ways other than keywords, I’m told I should seek out links. Consider ways that you can link to your internal content, to external websites and, most importantly, how you can get external websites to link to you. Spend time finding high quality sites with content that is closely related to your own. Then, contact the webmasters of those sites to see if they are interested in exchanging links with your site.
Occasionally, people will stumble upon my website by accident of course. That is not to say that they are likely to become instant customers. That is why it is necessary for me to be able to target the people who need my product. Good keyword research, and effective advertising placements, are a great way to bring in more targeted traffic.
