The Types of Baby Photography

baby photographyBaby photography should be something relaxing in nature and not hurried. It is all about capturing the innocence and the intense emotions of this special time. In this type of photography, the subject is usually a baby and their age can range from a few weeks old to a couple of months old. The baby is usually the one leading the shoot as everything that occurs during it is modeled around the baby’s comfort.

As a result of the baby being the main star, it is important that the whole process of it should not be complicated. Everything should be kept as simple as possible. It is advised for simplicity to be the main goal because babies are naturally fussy and you cannot expect them to be patient with you like an adult. The simpler the whole process, the easier it will be to conclude the shoot with a less hassled baby.

Going by the fact that baby photography focuses on babies, it can be said that there are two aspects to it:

  • Newborn photography

This niche of baby photography is solely established to focuses on the babies who more or less were just born into the world. Normally these babies are barely a few weeks old. Parents bearing in mind the nature of these babies know that the chances of them retaining their fragile newborn state are limited. As a result, they strive to get the pictures of the babies in this delicate state during the first few weeks.

During this period, the babies are soft all around with wrinkling of their skin and little tufts of her. The baby photographer then has to take care not to harm them in any form. Although much cannot be done with the babies still being in a delicate state, with the help of props and certain essentials (blankets, hats, scarves etc) it becomes easier to mold the babies to fit certain poses.

The babies here often spend most of their time sleeping and only stay awake for brief periods of time. Therefore if the photographer needs to get certain shots of them awake, he or she needs patience or to time their shoot just right.

  • Older baby photography

For lack of a proper defining term to associate babies older than one month, the term older baby photography will have to suffice. In this sub category of photography, the babies have had enough time to acclimatize to their new surroundings as well as develop a pattern. Based on the pattern and their new resilience to their surroundings, it becomes easier to have photo shoots with them.

Here, the babies although still soft will have properly developed certain aspects of their body (their neck is able to hold their heads without support) and it makes it easy for the photographer to set them in certain poses. Although certain props will no longer be needed to serve as support, they can serve as perfect additions to the backdrop of an image.

The babies are more active in this category and the photographer can gain more movements.

Props Based On Baby Photography Examples

Props for baby photo shoot

baby photographyIf there is anything that you can take away from the baby photography examples posted on the internet these days, it would have to be the fact that props used in baby photo shoots are pretty trendy and are pretty much in vogue in this day and age. If you want to be creative and to inject some sort of whimsy into your baby’s photo shoot one way or the other, then working with props is the kind of thing that can go ahead and check out at the end of the day. Although props look particularly difficult to pull off, most of the professional baby photographers out there are actually already well versed with the concept or with the idea so you can assure yourself that this isn’t something new to your photographer.

Try to go with someone who is experienced in the field and who really knows what he is trying to do in the first place because it will make all of the difference in the world when it all comes down to it. Familiarize yourself with most of the props being used and how you will be able to use it to your biggest advantage as a parent and as a client in baby photography.

Blankets, scarves, and other pieces of cloth. They are economical and easy to get your hands on. Most of the stores in your area will probably be selling these by bulk and you will always have all of the choices to take your picks from at the end of the day. Here are a few things that you ought to keep in mind when you are looking for great cloth options for you to choose from. The texture should be soft to the touch. Anything that might turn out to be a little too rough could end up chafing the baby and this is the last thing that you would want to do. Wash them ahead of time and get them soaked in fabric conditioner that is friendly to the baby’s skin. Go for the plain ones or for those that don’t really attract too much attention. You want the props to accentuate the baby in the photo, not take attention away from him. Avoid prints of any kind as they can look tacky and just a little too busy at times.

Plush toys

These props and toys are adorable and they are bound to keep your baby entertained. Take note though that these are dust factories so you might want to get them in the washer before you let your little one get a hold of them. Try to keep the plush toys theme related as much as possible so that you don’t end up veering too much away from the concept especially if you and your baby photographer are trying to work with one at some point or so during the baby photo shoot. If you notice, themes and concepts are pretty much the in thing in most of the baby photography examples you see out there so it is important that you keep the plush toys relevant to what you are trying to do and to what you are trying to achieve in the photos that are being taken of the baby.
